During Saturday night's AAA Triplemania XXIX show in Mexico on Saturday night, Kenny Omega retained the AAA Mega Championship in a match against Andrade El Idolo.
It was an awesome first-time bout, but one many fans were hoping would end with Andrade winning the title. As it turns out, that was the original plan according to Dave Meltzer.
"The backstory on this was that Andrade was originally going to win," he explained on Wrestling Observer Live. "AEW has control of Kenny’s finishes, they have to approve everything. They asked AAA to hold it off because I don’t think they wanted Kenny doing jobs on Friday and Saturday night. AAA is working with them, so Kenny won, that’s what happened."
This does make sense, especially after Omega lost the IMPACT Wrestling World Championship to Christian Cage the night before on AEW Rampage (a second loss definitely could have hurt his standing, though we're sure a good storyline reason could have been established to give Andrade the win).
We're sure that's coming, and the way things ended definitely left the door open for a rematch.
For now, Omega is likely to focus on defending the AEW World Championship against Cage at All Out on September 5. We're not expecting him to lose the title there, but Cage has been established as a greater threat following that blockbuster victory during the first episode of Rampage on TNT.
