Earlier this year, New Japan announced that the SUPER J-CUP would be making it’s return after a three-year hiatus, with Jushin “Thunder” Liger – who originally came up with the concept – producing the competition.
The event will take place in the United States for the first-time ever, first in Tacoma, San Francisco, and Long Beach. While no match-ups have been confirmed, New Japan has guaranteed that Liger will competing at all three US shows.
The promotion makes it clear that Liger will not participate in the SUPER J-CUP tournament; however, Liger is mostly a special attraction as it will likely be Liger’s final appearance in the US due to him retiring in the Tokyo Dome in 2020. At the moment, Liger’s opponents have yet to be confirmed.
The event will take place on August 22 in Tacoma, August 24 in San Francisco and August 25 in Long Beach. In past tournaments, numerous promotions have participated in the SUPER J-CUP. New Japan Pro Wrestling has an alliance with Ring of Honor and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), so most likely various talents will be apart of the competition.
