Impact Wrestling held their biggest show of the year, Bound For Glory, on Sunday, but instead of delivering an exciting and memorable pay-per-view, unfortunately they delivered a forgettable and bad showing.

This weekend has been exciting for both wrestling and MMA fans alike. UFC 217 was a blast to watch, NJPW’s Power Struggle was a lot of fun with the added surprise of the Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega announcement. However,  Impact Wrestling’s Bound For Glory would cap off the weekend and what a disappointment it was.

Impact Wrestling needed a strong show with all the negativity that’s surrounded this company lately. Instead, I was reminded that no matter how many logos, name changes, or presidents this company goes through, it’s still TNA. The overbooked matches, nonsensical logic, and the “only in TNA moments”. Now let me be clear, this was not a horrendous pay-per-view and I have seen a lot worse -  but the BAD strongly outweighed the GOOD here. I’m going to focus on the main problem.

Alberto El Patron. This was not a good night for him whatsoever. Personally speaking, I would’ve never booked a storyline involving Patron’s domestic violence case. Granted, Patron was portrayed as a heel, but heels are at their best when there’s truth behind their words. The best villains are the ones who don’t know that they’re villains. Patron’s long promo was far from truthful and it was clear that he was trying to tell the audience, ‘hey, I’m a bad guy’. Since Impact went on with the storyline; they should’ve went with the, “less is more approach”.

Patron could’ve simply said a few words of important context, which could’ve led to a sense of intrigue and excitement on what he would do next. Instead, he went on a long rambling promo that I simply stopped caring about by the time it was over. It was also telegraphed that Patron would interfere in the main event. I hoped not, but he did.
Patron attacked both Impact and Drake, but for some reason he wanted Drake to retain. This moment screamed, ‘hey, I’m a villain’ instead of this making any logical sense. If you’re going to attack Drake and Morrison, why do you care if Drake wins? In fact, why are you attacking Drake and Morrison? They have nothing to do with you being suspended. There’s no established friendship history between these three men. If Patron wanted to make a statement, he should’ve just attacked both men and left them lying.

What I saw was mostly what Impact Wrestling has been doing for the past 15 years; an overbooked main event. You would think by now that Impact would understand why they have a dwindling fan base each year. Instead of asking themselves, what are we doing that’s ruining our business; they seem to be stuck in an error of their own ways. It’s a shame because in 2016 Impact Wrestling was at its best. Then, they seem to be improved and finally understand what was not working. Nothing on this show left me excited for Thursday. The wrestlers tried hard, but if this company continues to book in this matter; Impact Wrestling will always be TNA in my eyes.
