NXT premiered on The CW network yesterday evening and was capped off with an NXT Championship match pitting Ethan Page against Trick Williams.
CM Punk was enlisted to serve as the special guest referee and the bout ended with Williams finally regaining his title. However, the way things wrapped off wasn't without some potential controversy.
In the closing moments of the match, Page hit Williams with Punk's finisher, the GTS. Williams kicked out and when "All Ego" looked for the Ego's Edge, the babyface escaped and, after being moved into the corner by the Second City Saint, he hit a Trick Shot for the 1-2-3.
An incensed Page ended the night by taking a GTS from Punk as Williams celebrated with his newly redesigned NXT Championship. We're sure Page will have more to say about Punk's involvement, though.
In a recent interview, Willaims pondered the possibility of being called up to WWE's main roster.
"I think about it all the time, but I’m happy where my feet are. I mean, NXT is on fire right now, arguably one of the better times NXT has ever seen," he told Chris Van Vliet. "So with that, I’m proud to be here. I’m proud to be the face of NXT."
"Why are we going to CW? Why we got the biggest TV deal NXT has ever gotten? Why are we doing this traveling and stuff now? I’m part of it, and it feels good to say hey, we are part of something special here."
As for what a future dream match would be for him in WWE, Williams added, "Roman Reigns, he’s the top guy in the business right now. I mean, shout out to Cody Rhodes, who is amazing. I’m glad that he finished and started his new story."
"But Roman, he’s the guy who’s been the cornerstone of the business for a while now. So if you don’t want to match with him, then you don’t really want to be here."
