This past week, DEFY Wrestling crowned a new World Champion.

At the DEFY On Edge show, then champion Shane Strickland lost to challenger Artemis Spencer after a grueling 20-minute match.

Strickland has been a hot topic in wrestling as of late due to reports that the independent star is WWE bound in 2019. It was recently reported that the former DEFY World champion was having contract issues with his former employer, Lucha Underground, which might prevent him from signing with the company anytime soon.

Strickland was Lt. Jermaine Strickland, a military veteran who wrestled under a mask as Killshot. Strickland was on board for the entire four seasons of LU, with his character being written off this past season as he lost a mask vs. mask match to Son of Havoc and was finally given permission to be relieved of duty by Dante Fox.

There’s no update on whether his contract issues with Lucha Underground have been resolved, but the former DEFY World champion dropping the title could be a sign that Strickland will be at the Performance Center in January.
